CHAPTER 14
SPENCER STARES AT THE GATES of Woodland Terrace, bouncing from one foot to the other wishing heâd been able to get something to eat beforehand. Though he doubts heâd be able to keep anything down, so maybe itâs for the best.
âLetâs call the cops, Billy,â Spencer says, not caring how whiny his voice sounds.
âThereâs no reason to,â his brother answers and readjusts the backpack on his shoulders.
Spencer laughs. âNo reason to? Eddie threatened us with a gun. He beat the shit out of you and Carlos and took Tori. Tori.â
âHe didnât beat the shit out me,â Billy says. âAnd what would we tell them anyways? âYes, hello, officer? We stole from a drug dealer and now heâs kidnapped my girlfriend, can you please help?ââ
âWe donât have to say all that. We could just tell them how Eddie went crazy and threatened us with a gun. Thatâs probably enough.â
âNo,â Billy says firmly. âWe can handle this. Besides, you want Dad finding out about any of this? And if the cops get involved, thatâs it for RBWL. You donât want that, do you?â
Spencer says nothing. The truth is he hasnât thought about the Royal Brooks Wrestling League in a while. He canât even remember the last time he looked at his black notebook and tried to piece a new storyline or come up with a new gimmick for one of the wrestlers. Drug deals, kidnappings, and being held at gun point have taken priority the last few days.
âLook, itâs that big retard.â
Spencer squints to where his brother is looking and sees T.J. coming down the hill. Heâs dressed in a large black overcoat, which Spencer finds weird considering the sweltering heat.
âPlease, Billy, letâs just leave and call the cops, okay?â
âToo late, little brother.â
The sound of the gateâs motors grinding and turning presses against Spencerâs spine and causes him to hold himself tight. T.J. stands on the other side of the gate, staring at the two brothers.
âYou ready, Spencer? He asked for the two of us,â Billy says.
I can do this, Spencer thinks and nods.
When the gate is open, T.J. turns around and begins walking back up the hill.
âI guess weâre supposed to follow him,â Spencer says.
Billy does just that. Spencer takes a deep breath and follows him.
âWhat did you tell Toriâs parents?â Spencer asks in between puffs of breath as they climb up the inclined parking lot.
âHuh?â Billy asks.
âToriâs parents. Remember? I told you that you needed to call them and make up some lie about to why she wasnât coming home yesterday.â
Billy stays quiet and keeps walking.
âYou did call them, right, Billy?â
âI forgot, okay? It isnât like I didnât have enough to deal with. Shit, it took me half the night to convince Carlos and the rest of the guys not to do anything stupid and tag along.â
Spencer closes his eyes and groans.
âWeâll just make something up. She stayed at my place, or we went camping and forgot to tell them. Itâs no big deal, we done it before,â he tells Billy.
